First of all, if you don’t appreciate how I slid a homage to Interview With The Vampire into my title, I will be truly disappointed. Secondly, I can’t wait to share this interview with you. It happens to be with a very good friend of mine who takes some of the most breathtaking photos I’ve ever seen. If you’ve ever seen any professional photos of me, then chances are they’ve been take by Thera Weenink from Thera’s Photograpy. I’ve also been lucky enough to be included in a lot of her ideas and shoots. I roll in and style the model and fire on some makeup and she turns it into art. I figured that as a young woman who has started her own business from the ground up, it would be great for readers to get her take on some things, like how to look best in your upcoming photos. So without further ado…
Good As Gold Living- So Thera, why photography?
Thera- It started as a hobbie when I was 19 and my love for it grew from there. So I figured, why not have a career that you actually enjoy?
Good As Gold Living- What is your favorite part of the job?
Thera- I really like meeting new people. When you meet people because of photos that you’re taking of them, there is always a level of excitement. With this job you’re always meeting people at the height of emotion. Happiness, sadness, ect.
Good As Gold Living- Professionally, what is your favorite kind of photo to take?
Thera- I really love connection sessions. What I mean by that is engagement or couple photos. I like capturing the uniqueness of love between different couples. Everyone’s definition of intimacy is different. So it’s nice to see what love looks like specifically to them.
Good As Gold Living- Personally, what is your favorite kind of photo to take?
Thera- I’ve always loved taking photos of abandoned houses. Destroyed beauty interests me. The imperfections that are hiding under the illusion of perfection. I’ve been obsessed with abandoned houses for almost a decade now. They were also one of the first things I started to photograph, so I’ve literally built my career on my love for them.
Good As Gold Living- What is the one session that you’ve always dreamed about doing? Say, if you had to cross one off your photography bucket list?
Thera- I really want to photograph a male same sex couple. That’s the only kind of shoot I haven’t had the priveledge of doing yet. Like I said, I love capturing love in photos. Also, a destination wedding would be a lot of fun to photograph. Different surroundings always make my job a little more exciting.
Good As Gold Living- Ok, let’s talk about style for a bit. Any tips on how people can dress that will be the most flattering for them in front of the lens?
Thera- Personally, I find that solid colors work the best. Solid colors in deep tones always show up in photos beautifully. You can never go wrong with solids for photos.
Good As Gold Living- As a young woman who started her own business, what advice would you give other young ladies or gentlemen that are starting out?
Thera- Don’t sell yourself short. Ever. No matter who hires you. Your time is always worth something. Also, always try to stay humble. Let your work show for itself. The best photographers always seem to take that route.
Good As Gold Living- We work together a lot. Why? (This is where if you listen hard you can hear cackles of laughter coming from me because I’ve managed to turn this interview about me magically. Also, I would like to point out she sat in silence for three minutes before even attempting to answer lol).
Thera- You get me. You get what I want to bring out in people. We have the same aesthetic. We both like a really dark look. Or I guess I mean we both like a dark look and aren’t afraid to try it out. You’re always willing to go along with any ideas I come up with.
Good As Gold Living- Absolutely. If we fail, at least we will fail together lol. With tons of photographers in the area, you have a great reputation. That’s hard to come by. It’s something that I’ve always admired about you. Any tips on how others can achieve that?
Thera- Awe, thank you! I really try to listen to what people want and try to build a connection with them. For example, brides already have so much to plan and worry about. When it comes to doing photographs with me, I want to make it an experience that they don’t have to stress about. I find that treating people with respect and kindness and listening to what they actually want goes a long way.
Good As Gold Living- As a bride planning a wedding herself, what are those shots that every bride needs to have?
Thera- I love capturing all of the firsts. They are always the most emotional shots of the day. Putting the dress on, a mother hugging her son who’s about to say “I Do”, the groom seeing his bride for the first time. These are all photos that show pure and raw emotion. Those are the memories that I hope people (including myself) will have of their wedding.
Good As Gold Living- Lastly, you do a lot of boudoir shoots (not for me, even though I know you’re dying to lol). What advice would you give any nervous boudoir first timers?
Thera- Be yourself. You’re beautiful. I know that a certain level of those kind of shoots are supposed to be fantasy, but be a fantasy, bad ass version of yourself. The person that you’re taking these photos for loves you for who you are and what you already look like. Seeing you comfortable in your own skin and owning it is one of the best gifts you can give your significant other.
Good As Gold Living- Well, thank you so much for allowing me to pick your brain for a bit. I can’t wait to see some more amazing photo shoots from you. I also can’t wait to get together for our next over the top editorial vision.
