Sometimes you’re sitting around having your nightly cup of “tea” (I use the word “tea” loosely because I obviously mean wine)  and you notice that you want to do something different decor wise. Well before you run out and grab some paint or wallpaper, why not try some small changes first. They may not seem like much, but they can make a pretty big impact in a room. Plus, you won’t be holding a paint roller for five hours.

Try Some New Lighting

Having dated lighting or ceiling fans can drag a room down. If you are looking for an easy way to refresh the look of a room, then try a lighting fixture in a feel that you like. You can even DIY a lighting project if you’re crafty. A globe cut in half, a drum shade, and even a birdcage can be placed over existing fixtures to make it your own. If you own lamps you can also add your own personality to them by just replacing the shade in a complimentory color and adding lace, ribbon, or anything else that you like.

Amp Up Your Plants

I love houseplants and flowers. I do not, however, have a green thumb. I killed a cactus once and I’m not even kidding. So I usually go for the fake. A couple of easy ways of  amping up your home is by adding colored rocks to your plants for interest. You can just use aquarium rocks. You can also spray paint your pots or vases in colors that accent the rest of your belongings. It’s small things like that that can add a lot of interest and can pull together the whole look of a room.  Also, using interesting items to keep the plants in can draw a lot of interest. Tea pots, mason jars, and small vintage suitcases can all be used and add a lot of personality.

Add Natural Elements

If plants and flowers aren’t your thing, then try some other natural resources to add some warmth to a room. Branches in a bowl, a walking stick in the corner of a room, acorns, shells, or pinecones in a vase can make a beautiful centerpiece for the dining room table or a warm way to welcome guests by being in the front porch. If your decor style isn’t that warm, then try something like a bowl of sea glass to carry over the cooler components that you already have in your room of choice.

Add Color

If you want an easy update, then revamp your fabrics. You can change the way a room looks just by changing the pillows and throws or curtains. Remember that if you choose to redo your curtains,  to hang them wide and high over your window to instantly add more drama. Throw pillows and throws are a great way to incorporate a new pattern or color into your home without it being permanent. You can add a little more luxury with fur, or you can add a little bit of fun with a bright color or a chevron or damask pattern. With so many different styles to choose from its a great way to refresh a room with very little commitment and without breaking the bank.

Pay Attention To Your Floor

To easily add a statement or accent piece to your home, try a rug. You can find one in the style or color that you’re wanting to add to your home and yet again, it’s very little commitment. I have many throughout my home like under my dining room table, in my living room and because I painted my sons room beige, I added one to his room for his bed to sit on in accenting colors. That way, there is still a nice flow to the colors of my home but it adds a bit of interest. Another great way to use a rug is to update a porch. Plus, if you have tile or wood in your porch, it’s a great way to protect your flooring from snow and dirt. It’s a great way to get a custom look for your home on the cheaper end of the spectrum.

Update Your Walls

No, I don’t mean by painting. Every time I  say the word paint out loud I hear “Booooooooooooo” come from my husband. So instead, try covering a canvas in a fabric that you like or in a wallpaper. You can frame it and hang it. That way you can change it out easily anytime you want to give your home a new vibe. You can also frame maps, the sleeper or beanie that your child came home from the hospital in, or your wedding invitation. It’s a great way to show guests pieces of your life and personality that they might not normally get to see.

This is is the time of year where you can easily decorate for the changing seasons and for the holidays. You can easily add halloween accents and change it up for Christmas without it taking a lot of time or breaking the bank. Most of all, it’s a great way to get creative and have a little fun in your home when the cold hits.
