What’s better than regular candles? How about candles that moisturizer and nourish your skin! Plus, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and this is a great way to do something special without having to break the bank. Here’s how to do it.
What You’ll Need
1 part natural beeswax or soy wax
1 part natural Shea butter or cocoa butter
1 part sweet almond or jojoba oil
Your choice of essential oils (2-5 drops per ounce)
Container of choice. You can use old tins, old tea cups, old candle jars, or my personal favorite, old china gravy boats so that you can pour some of the melted wax out easily if you like.
Candle wicks (you can find them at craft stores)
Double boiler
Cheese grater or knife
Wooden spoon for stirring
How To Do It
1. Place your wick in the bottom of your jar of choice and put to the side.
2. Cut or grate your wax and butter. The smaller the pieces, the more evenly and quickly your mixture will melt.
3. Get your double boiler heating up over medium heat. Gently mix the wax, butter and oil together with your fancy wooden spoon until it’s melted. When I say gently, I mean that if you do this step too quickly you could get air bubbles and that’s going to throw your final result off.
4. Remove from heat, add your essential oils and gently mix again.
5. Grab your jar with the wick in it and pour your mixture in. If you need to support your wick so that it stays up, simply tie the wick around a spoon or some chopsticks balanced over the jar. This will hold the wick taught and keep it upright.
6. Set aside again for about twenty minutes and when you get back to it the candle should have gone from a liquid to a solid. Cut the wick from whatever is holding it upright or trim it if it’s too long and your ready to get burning!
Now you can simply dip your fingers into the wax and use (please don’t burn your hand off) or pour a bit out as it melts. Once again, be careful.
If you give this a try let me know what your favorite scent to use is. Personally I like a good gardenia, rose, or mint which is great for burning during a cold and rubbing on your chest once it’s melted. Again, be sure that it’s not too hot before you use it or you will have the aroma of burning flesh and nothing else. Happy crafting!
