Have you ever looked at someone’s hair and thought “I wish my hair looked like that”? Well chances are that lovely locked lady with the amazingly full hair has some kind of extensions in. And if you’ve ever wondered how your favorite brunette actress can get perfect blonde peekaboo highlights without her hair falling off…. Well, those are probably extensions too. From adding an accent color to the middle layers of your hair or even adding bangs without the commitment, extensions are usually the route to go. Much like finding the right man, you just have to find the right kind for you.

The No Strings Attached One Night Stand Aka Clip In Extensions

These are perfect if you want length and fullness without the costly commitment. You simply lift up your layers of hair, clip them and style how you want and go. You can get a lighter shade than your hair and use them as highlights without the damage to your hair. Just remember that at the end of the night, even if your skunk drunk, take them out. Or you will wake up with a knotted mess.

The Boyfriend That Uses More Products Than You Aka Bonded Extensions

These are “Hollywood” extensions. Small pieces of hair are fused to your own hair by a stylist. The results are very natural if your hair already has a bit of length. They also can last up to five months if you maintain them well. The downside is the hefty price tag. Your going to pay at least a grand and up for this procedure. They definatly aren’t for someone who is flighty.

The Boyfriend That Looks Great Beside You But Breaks Your Belongings When You Fight Aka Glue In Extensions

Glue in extensions are just that. Pieces of hair held in place by glue. I personally advise this as your last route only because of the damage the glue can do to your natural hair. It does come out with special solvent at time of removal, but this type also has a high “oops! A piece of hair fell off on the bus” rate. They are on the cheaper end of the spectrum though.

The Sneaky, Phantom “I Wasn’t At At The Party” Boyfriend Aka Tape In Extensions

Tape in extensions are a lot of people’s favorite kind of hair extensions. They lie very flat so you don’t even know that they’re there. And because they are secured by a thin piece of very secure tape, your styling options are almost limitless. They also need a special solvent to loosen the tape but the process on your hair is a lot less harsh than glue. They are also very accessible because of the medium range price tag.

The If You Don’t Treat Me Right I’m Out Of Here Boyfriend Aka Clamp In Extensions

Clamp in extensions are small pieces of hair that are placed into a small piece of metal at the base of your hair and clamped in with pliers. They give the same believable look as bonded extensions but aren’t as expensive. However, you have to be very careful while brushing your hair because you can actually slide them down so they may need to be tightened sooner.

The Full Commitment I Want To Have Your Children Boyfriend Aka Sew In Extensions

A stylist sews on a full weft of hair to a piece of your own hair that’s been cornrowed to your head. Essentially your hair is braided flat to your head with the extension sewn to it. This hair is going nowhere. It is also called a weave. You can have a few braids done for length and fullness or you can have your whole head done for perfect Beyonce hair. Once this starts to grow out though you need to get it tightened to maintain it. It’s also higher on the pain scale. I should know, I’ve had my hair done this way for almost seven years now. It has a medium to high price range as well.

If you haven’t had much to do with extensions, then I would purchase some clip ins for fun. Play around with it. See if you enjoy them. My only tip is please buy real human hair so that you can style it. Synthetic hair can’t have any heat touch it without it melting. Girl, you don’t need any plastic hair on your head so just don’t. You can easily find very good quality clip ins for a modest price. After you’ve tried your hand at those and you want to have something more permanent then talk to your stylist. They will know what your willing to look after and what your not. They will be honest and tell you if your hair is only ready for a one night stand extension or if its ready for the full commitment.
