Stress can get the best of us sometimes…..especially when your a parent. There are some days that feel like they’re never ending and morning wine can be deemed “inappropriate” by some people. So to save your sanity you have to search for relaxation methods that can be done at home, usually in the company of a baby howler monkey. Even a five minute break can do a world of good, and more importantly, will help you keep your cool when peanut butter is smeared all over your new couch. Here are some great at home methods to help catch your breath after a hectic day.
- Hang a small bouquet of fresh Eucalyptus from your shower head while you have a hot shower. The scent and the heat will work together to calm your nerves.
- Have a nice long, hot soak in the tub. Complete with candles and scented Epsom salts. Besides being very relaxing the Epsom salts will help with any aches and pains you have.
- Exercise. I know I know. That’s probably the last thing a lot of people (including myself) want to do when they’re stressed. But it does the body and mind a world of good. Especially if you focus on doing some mind clearing yoga.
- Turn off your phone. That’s right ladies. Turn it off. Step away from the texting, the Facebook, the emails and the Instagram for half an hour. Remove everyone’s social clutter from your brain. It will thank you for it.
- Pay your pets some attention. Petting a cat or a dog for a little bit will calm your nerves AND lower your blood pressure. Plus who doesn’t love a little animal attention.
- Sing. Turn on your music and sing your ass off. Into a hairbrush, on the couch, into a mirror. Whatever floats your boat. This is a great way to de-stress.
- Put the caffeine down. It’s just going to make you even more jittery and high strung. Even if you just have a cup less than usual. It’s a start.
- Eat a banana. I’m not even kidding. Just eat a damn banana and trust me. It’s a natural stress and anxiety reducer.
- Sex. This one is best practiced once the kids are in bed….or your just opening up a whole different can of stress.
- Curl up with a book. Even if you only have time for a couple chapters. It’s an easy way to slip into an alternate stress free reality for a bit.
Everyone has different levels of stress in their lives. As long as you take the time out for yourself and try a couple of things on this list you should feel more relaxed in no time. And if not, I’ve saved the best stress buster for last. If eating a banana just didn’t do it for you then try this: Slowly breathe in and out, close your eyes and count to ten……….while pouring a large glass of wine. Sometimes ladies, as hard as we may try, the day just calls for a large glass of wine.
